Could use some suggestions here...

State-o-mind: Overwhelmed with concepts
Task at Hand: Writing story for personal project... ideas for loft.
On The Horizon: Astral Project myself from work to the loft on Friday at 7:00pm - 7:20
What is working: keeping upright and moving
What is not working: Headache threatening to bring me down.
Other thoughts: Ok... would like brainstorming ideas from everyone as to how to nail down a concept. I have several personal/universal truths to explore, some more interesting to others, all interesting to me. How do I choose one and run with the idea, morph it into something watchable? I cannot seem to stop avoiding putting something personal out there (intellectually, not a problem). I keep telling myself to just do it... yet bogged down and ready to hide for another millenia. So what inspires others to get to it and love an idea? Thanks for any input you can give.

  1. I think that you should really feel driven by it. It something you've wanted to share forever and now its finally your big chance to do it and get help. My story means a lot to me and I know I was near to tears as I told it, but its because its personal that I get attached to it and make it into the best thing I can. I like to sketch ideas, listen to music that pumps me and goe into like...a trance I guess (no drugs) and just enjoy myself...laugh even.

Bring your awesome confidence out Brenda.

  2. You know...you could present an "all call" for input to the class on Tuesday. Let your teammates help you find safe and fertile ground. That's part of what we're trying to do here. Share your personal story with them. You will be surprised if you reach out. I would first be thinking about some concepts/notions that are near and dear to your heart. Don't second guess or judge your creative muse, just let it bubble up and write down whatever comes. Your pitch/presentation doesn't have to follow any format--you can make it into a Q & A sessions if you like.

  4. Write a quick biography for yourself. Read it over and look for what you have documented that might have a more universal appeal. Independent animator Pat Smith sums it up much better than I can in this blog post:

Here is the critical part for me...

"As artists, our first responsibility is to represent the natural world we live in, or those we live with, and to express that in emotional terms that others can relate to."

Start with your story, then find what is universal. You are observant, so describe what you see.

  5. Super-concur. More sage advice from the always on-target Herr Professor Doktor.

  6. Do what you love. Animation projects, as we all know, are lengthy creatures and consume mass amounts of energy. If you love it, it won't seem like your loosing life in dog years.
Bounce ideas off of other folks and drink in the creative juices that flow. DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH EVERY IDEA! It can be death for an animator. It's okay to kill your darlings and move on to an idea or gag that will work better. Especially if it helps the story. Remember, in this industry, story is key. Wow that seems so jumbled, but I hope it helps. :)

  7. I think... what works for me is finding something powerful - or something I know I want to do - and making it work. Carving it until that square idea fits into that round hole. Not abandoning and starting over. If nothing really drives you towards an idea, do something that fits the requirements, and you'll eventually get it done - even if you don't love it.
